Golf Course Homes – a good investment and a great lifestyle choice

With the Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club this week (17-20th) and the Ryder Cup, the biennial Europe v US competition, at Gleneagles in September (26-28th) excitement is building amongst the 4 million golfers (8% of the adult population) that play the game in the UK today.

Golf is growing in popularity, reportedly by 17% over the last year, and the IAGTO reports three years of consecutive growth for global golf tourism. Destinations as diverse as Spain, South Africa, Scotland, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Mexico, Portugal, Turkey and Thailand have all reported year on year growth. Various sources indicate that there are well over 31,000 full-length golf facilities in the world, of which there are 6,560 in Europe, according to figures produced by the European Golf Association.

Roger Beale, Director of Golf at Royal Westmoreland in Barbados and a former member of the Canadian Tour remarks: ”Golf is popular because you can involve yourself on numerous levels. You can be casual or very serious, it all depends on how much time and effort you have to put in. Golf has many hooks – the scenery, the social side, the competition, the equipment, and the travelling. It allows you many avenues to keep you from being bored. Because of the handicapping system, you can play with anyone and enjoy a game, regardless if the person is better than you, older or younger.”

Roger notices the effect of big tournaments on his members. “Big events definitely help make golfers keener. It creates a buzz around the club and it helps people embrace the game.”

So what are the advantages of buying a home on a golf course, apart from the obvious one of proximity to the course for keen golfers?

Waterfront Homes are Proven to be Good for Your Health & Wealth


Research shows that those living beside water feel healthier than those living inland, and their homes command an average premium of 54%, according to statistics by Knight Frank.

It is not clear why, but waterfront living makes people feel calmer, more relaxed and energetic. Living where you can breathe in sea breezes helps to make you feel invigorated. It is certainly known that sea water is charged with healthy negative ions that accelerate our ability to absorb oxygen and also help to balance levels of Serotonin, a hormone linked to mood and stress.

It could be linked to the concept of Biophilia which suggests humans have inbuilt to their DNA a connection to nature. Biophilic design in homes incorporates fresh air, daylight and natural materials, creating a visual and physical connection with nature and all living beings.

A keen advocate of these Biophilic design principals is the developer Environ who incorporate these aspects into their homes and most recently at their new waterfront apartment scheme overlooking the estuary at Dartmouth in Devon, ‘Sails’.
