New Direct Flights to Sarajevo Enable Affordable Ski Holidays in Bosnia

New direct flights from London Luton to Sarajevo with the national carrier FlyBosnia have been launched this September. The brand new route will open up affordable ski holidays for Brits, especially over Christmas/New Year, which are being provided by tour operator Ski Sarajevo.

Bosnia’s winter sports pedigree is without doubt with Sarajevo having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1984, where Torvill & Dean won Gold. The pistes on which the Olympic races were originally held have been restored and the Olympic rings on display at the base of the slopes remind visitors of its legacy. The resort remains an excellent destination for winter sports and is easily accessible, with the two main mountains, Jahorina and Bjelasnica, only 28kms (less than an hour’s drive) from the airport.

Stretching to 1,916 metres above sea level, Jahorina is normally covered in between one and three metres of snow during the winter (December to end of March). With 45 kms of alpine and 10kms of nordic trails, the resort is serviced by eight ski lifts comprising a brand new gondola lift for 2019/20, three modern six-seater fast lifts, one two-seater lift and three button lifts. The mountain can host around 17,000 skiers per hour.

Despite these excellent facilities and ski fields, Jahorina remains a relatively undiscovered gem of Europe, with skiers and snow boarders able to avoid the congestion and high prices of the Alps of Western Europe.

For Christmas and New Year bookings, there are none of the additional supplements normally added, making Sarajevo one of the most affordable places to ski this festive season. Additionally, with equipment hire only €12 per day and food and drinks payable in the local “Bosnian Marks,” skiers pay only a fraction of what they would in Austria, Switzerland or France. As an example, a large beer in many French ski resorts is around €8 Euros, whereas in Bosnian ski resorts it is approximately €2.

The resort is already popular with families who enjoy the family-friendly slopes and ski gardens, and with those who want to avoid the more boisterous budget resorts in Europe frequented by younger Brits and stag parties.

After the war in the 90s, Sarajevo has bounced back as the alternative, affordable capital and has been rated by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten cities to visit in the World. The vibrant city makes for an excellent twin centre break for skiers who also want to experience some history, culture and great restaurants.

FlyBosnia flights are every Saturday and Tuesday throughout the year making it perfect for a one-week, ten-night, or even a long weekend visit. All customers booking a ski package through Ski Sarajevo receive a discount off FlyBosnia’s standard rates for departures in 2019 or 2020.
