The Sleep Reset, how two hotels in Portugal are reimagining rest
At a time when the average UK adult sleeps just 6.4 – 6.5 hours per night - well below the NHS-recommended 7–9 hours - a growing number of travellers are seeking more than escape.
In Alentejo a tranquil and rural region in southern Portugal known for its slow pace of life, whitewash villages, exceptional wine, and an unspoiled Atlantic coastline, two pioneering properties managed by Amazing Evolution, Sleep & Nature Hotel and Gandum Conscious Hotel, are placing sleep and deep rest at the centre of the travel experience. Through thoughtful design, immersive natural settings, and a different approach to wellbeing, these hotels, just a short distance from Portugal’s capital city Lisbon, are redefining what it means to truly switch off.
Surrounded by forests and rolling plains, both destinations offer a powerful antidote to modern fatigue. Here, the pace slows, digital noise fades, and rest becomes intentional.
Bruno Barbosa, Operational Director at Amazing Evolution says; “Today travellers are no longer simply looking for a place to stay, but for a place to truly rest and recover. At both Sleep & Nature Hotel and Gandum Conscious Hotel, they have placed sleep at the heart of the experience - whether through science-led programmes or conscious design - because quality rest is the foundation of wellbeing and a more meaningful travel experience.”
SLEEP & NATURE HOTEL
At Sleep & Nature Hotel, rest is approached with scientific precision and natural harmony. Located near Montemor-o-Novo, the hotel is built around the concept of sleep therapy, mentored by a dedicated sleep specialist Professor Teresa Paiva, ensuring that every guest experience is rooted in in nature, good practices, relaxing therapies and sleep hygiene that allow for learning. Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, is among the activities guests can indulge in.

The hotel features 32 rooms and suites, each carefully designed to actively support better sleep. Natural materials such as cork and wood help regulate temperature and acoustics, while blackout curtains, low lighting, and minimal in-room technology reduce sleep disruption. Beds are selected for ergonomic support and paired with high-quality linens to enhance comfort and encourage deeper, uninterrupted rest. Private terraces and calming views of the surrounding countryside further promote relaxation, helping to lower stress levels before sleep.
Guests can engage in guided relaxation techniques, mindfulness sessions, and gentle evening routines designed to prepare the body for sleep. The hotel’s spa offers treatments specifically aimed at reducing tension and improving circulation, while indoor and outdoor pools provide quiet spaces for pre-sleep unwinding. Even dining plays a role, with balanced, seasonal menus designed to support relaxation and prepared with fresh and local products. While overstimulation must be avoided in the evening.
A pillows menu is available to better adjust ergonomics and rest needs.
Rooms start from €180 per night. For more information visit Sleep & Nature Hotel.
GANDUM CONSCIOUS HOTEL
A short distance away, Gandum Conscious Hotel is a hotel that is beginning to gain recognition in Europe for its work, almost a mission, in the field of regenerative tourism. One of its greatest contributions has been the planting of over 50,000 trees in an agroforestry environment, with the aim of making the territory more resilient and capable.
Gandum Conscious Hotel offers a complementary vision of rest, grounded in sustainability and conscious living. Set within the Alentejo countryside, the hotel blends minimalist architecture with a strong environmental ethos, creating an atmosphere that naturally encourages stillness and restoration.

Gandum Conscious Hotel’s rooms with organic mattresses, natural pillows and comforters made from sustainable materials, and breathable cotton linens, all chosen to optimise comfort. Thermal insulation and natural ventilation keep rooms cool and quiet, even during the warmer months, while carefully filtered natural light aligns with circadian rhythms helping guests wake and sleep more naturally.
Surrounded by greenery and free from urban noise, guests can experience true silence - one of the most powerful contributors to quality sleep. Outdoor gardens, shaded terraces, and a natural stream, encourage slow screen-free time.
The beautiful hotel also supports balance through integrated coworking spaces, guests can structure their day efficiently, reducing stress and allowing for clearer boundaries between work and rest. Nutritionally conscious, following a farm-to-fork philosophy, in which mostly only what is available in the vegetable garden, orchard, and henhouse is cooked. meals further support overall wellbeing, reinforcing the connection between what we consume and how we sleep. At Gandum guests can also learn how to make wiser decisions and how to contribute to a better environment, and that also improves good night sleeps.
Rooms start from €220 per night. For more information visit Gandum Conscious Hotel.
Together, Sleep & Nature Hotel and Gandum Conscious Hotel highlight a shift in travel priorities. Sleep is no longer an afterthought, but a defining element of the holiday.
In the stillness of Portugal’s Alentejo, where nature creates part of the experience, these hotels offer more than accommodation, they provide a space to recalibrate.
Bruno Barbosa continues: “By combining nature and evidence-based wellbeing practices, Sleep & Nature Hotel and Gandum Conscious Hotel aim to create environments where guests can disconnect from daily pressures and reconnect with nature and themselves. In these special places they can learn good practices, reassess the true meaning of sophistication, and realize that simplicity, nature, and places where we can just be ourselves are the true luxuries in life.”
Those ready to hit reset, can reach Sleep & Nature Hotel and Gandum Conscious Hotel by flying to Lisbon Airport.
Where Local Identity Meets Contemporary Design: Andaz Lisbon Unveils Staff Uniforms Designed by Carla Pontes
Lisbon, Portugal - February 2026 – Andaz Lisbon, the much-anticipated new hotel in the heart of the capital, set to open in March 2026, proudly presents its new staff uniforms, designed by acclaimed Portuguese fashion designer Carla Pontes. This distinctive collaboration celebrates a contemporary dialogue between Portuguese craft, culture, and hospitality.
Created exclusively for Andaz Lisbon, the uniform’s creative concept draws inspiration from the hybrid and mystical figures of Portuguese popular art, with particular emphasis on the Figurado de Barcelos, a certified and emblematic form of folk art.
Rooted in everyday life, as well as religious and pagan traditions, these hand-modelled clay sculptures informed the project’s vision. Their expressive forms and vibrant colours influenced the colour palette, graphic patterns and custom-designed jewellery, conceived as integral elements of the uniforms. Together, these elements create a dialogue between contemporary hospitality design and Portugal’s rich artisanal heritage.
The uniforms are conceived as unique pieces that balance structured and fluid materials, expressing a modern, distinctive and refined spirit. A light, luminous colour palette, inspired by the natural light of Lisbon, supports comfortable, active silhouettes designed to keep pace with the dynamics of daily work. Versatile coat closures and adaptable design details allow for multiple ways of wearing each piece, encouraging personal expression while maintaining a cohesive and practical uniform language.
The uniform project for Andaz Lisbon was developed in close collaboration with illustrator Melissa Antunes and jewellery designer Joana Santos, whose contributions were fundamental to shaping the visual and material identity of the uniforms.
Cajetan Araujo, General Manager at Andaz Lisbon, comments: “At Andaz Lisbon, we believe personal style is a powerful form of storytelling. Designed for those with a global sensibility, Andaz hotels are grounded in their local surroundings and infused with local culture. Collaborating with Carla Pontes allowed us to translate the spirit of Lisbon into garments that our team can wear with pride, pieces that feel authentic, comfortable, and expressive of our ‘personal style’.
Carla Pontes, esteemed fashion designer and curator of the new Andaz Lisbon uniforms, adds: “These uniforms were conceived to move with people, to support their daily rhythms while reflecting the quiet sophistication of Lisbon. It was essential to create garments that feel natural, timeless and deeply connected to place in such an exciting, new hotel.
“It’s been a really collaboratively process from the initial brief, through to the final product. I love exploring the relationship between textiles and three-dimensional bodies through a minimalist and process-driven approach, with eco-design principles at the core of my practice.”
The hotel’s ethos of immersive, locally-rooted luxury while embodying the modern elegance and artisanal sensitivity for which Carla Pontes is renowned for. Beyond aesthetics, sustainability and durability were central to the design process, with careful consideration given to fabric selection and longevity, aligning with Andaz Lisbon’s commitment to responsible luxury.
The brand-new hotel will offer a vibrant and immersive experience that reflects Lisbon’s rich cultural heritage and artistic spirit, welcoming both locals and global travelers alike.
Nestled on Rua do Comércio in the heart of the city’s historic Baixa district, the hotel is steps away from Lisbon’s most emblematic landmarks, including the majestic Rua Augusta Arch and the historic Praça do Comércio. The landmark location, where navigators and merchants once gathered, is a fusion of Moorish heritage and Pombaline elegance, reimagined for the modern traveller.
Hotel Highlights:
- 170 stylish guestrooms and suites, ranging from 22 sqm to 99 sqm, with views of Lisbon landmarks including São Jorge Castle, Praça do Comércio and Tagus River.
- A sophisticated rooftop restaurant and terrace serving modern Lusitanian cuisine inspired by Portugal’s maritime legacy, with live music, DJ sets, and crafted cocktails under the stars.
- Andaz Lounge, a ground-floor social hub inspired by Lisbon’s beloved kiosks, offering Portuguese street food, artisan coffee, and hand-crafted local beers and spirits.
As part of the World of Hyatt program, visitors can also earn and redeem points throughout their stay.

- Outdoor sauna - After a day of outdoor activities, relaxing in a coastal sauna promotes detoxification, improves circulation, and delivers deep relaxation.
- Sunrise Watching - Watching the sun kick start the day has been proven to improve mood, inspire awe, and reduce inflammation. Exposure to early morning light also helps develop a healthy circadian rhythm, allowing a more restful sleep at night.

FORMULA 1® PORTUGUESE GRAND PRIX CONFIRMED FOR PORTIMÃO, ALGARVE IN 2027 AND 2028
TOURISM SECTOR WELCOMES THE RETURN OF FORMULA 1® AND HIGHLIGHTS ITS ECONOMIC AND PROMOTIONAL IMPACT FOR PORTUGAL AND THE ALGARVE
Faro, Portugal 16 December 2025: Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve welcome today’s official announcement from Formula 1®, confirming the return of the Formula 1® Portuguese Grand Prix to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) in 2027 and 2028. This highly anticipated decision reflects the joint efforts of a national task force that, over recent months, brought together the Government of Portugal, promoter Parkalgar, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve.

Portugal’s confirmation on the Formula 1® calendar represents a renewed vote of international confidence in the country’s organisational capability and in the technical excellence of the AIA. The circuit is widely recognised by drivers and teams as one of the most challenging and exciting modern tracks for Formula 1®. In 2020 and 2021, during an unprecedented pandemic context, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve played a decisive role by ensuring-safely, efficiently and with the highest operational standards-the continuation of the championship, becoming a true success story for Portugal. Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve thank Formula 1® for its renewed confidence in the country.

Several studies conducted after the 2020 and 2021 editions demonstrated the strong economic and promotional return associated with the event, estimating a combined impact of around €100 million per Grand Prix. It also represented an outstanding opportunity for international exposure for Portugal and for the Algarve brand, strengthening the destination’s presence on a global stage with enormous visibility, 827m fans worldwide and an average race weekend audience of nearly 70 million.
With the confirmation of the 2027 and 2028 editions, Portugal once again joins the select group of countries that host the world’s most prestigious motorsport championship. For these events, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve anticipate that economic impact and media value will significantly exceed those recorded in 2020 and 2021, supported by the return to normal of international travel and the exponential growth of global Formula 1® audiences in recent years – further reinforcing the international standing of Portugal and the Algarve region.
The Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services, Pedro Machado, notes that “the return of Formula 1® to Portugal in 2027 and 2028 confirms the country’s growing status as a leading destination for world-class events and is fully aligned with the Government’s strategy for the tourism sector and the national economy. Hosting a Formula 1® Grand Prix is a strategic step for the region and the country, strengthening our international visibility and consolidating our position as a tourism destination. We are ready to host this event, showcasing the best of Portuguese hospitality and our entrepreneurial spirit.”
Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, highlights that “Formula 1® once again places Portugal at the centre of global attention, reinforcing the country’s image as a vibrant, modern destination capable of hosting large-scale international events. Beyond its unparalleled media coverage, this event boosts the sector, energises the regions involved and helps consolidate Portugal’s position among the most attractive and competitive destinations in Europe. It will be a strategic moment that showcases the quality of our hospitality, the diversity of our offering and the ability of Portuguese tourism to generate a positive impact on the territory and the economy.”
The President of Turismo do Algarve, André Gomes, states that “the return of Formula 1® to Portimão is excellent news for the Algarve and for Portugal. It confirms the strategic vision we have pursued for the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve and for strengthening the destination’s international standing. Turismo do Algarve is fully committed to ensuring the success of these editions, guaranteeing that Portugal once again hosts Formula 1® with the excellence, safety and hospitality that the world recognised and praised in 2020 and 2021.”
For the Algarve, the return of Formula 1® represents a decisive reinforcement in the region’s position as a destination for major international events, expanding its worldwide visibility and strengthening its competitiveness in a highly competitive global tourism market. Hosting the Formula 1® Portuguese Grand Prix will further stimulate tourism demand – one of the region’s strategic objectives – both by deepening and diversifying the offering through segments such as sports tourism and event tourism, and by boosting the regional business ecosystem through the additional demand generated.
Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve congratulate Formula 1®, the Government of Portugal, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve – via promoter Parkalgar – and the Municipality of Portimão for the joint work that made this return possible, thanking all entities involved for their commitment and collaboration throughout the negotiation process leading to this newly announced two-year agreement.

Travel Trends for 2025: Exploring a New Era of Exploration

Travel Trends for 2025: Exploring a New Era of Exploration
As the world continues to evolve, so do our travel preferences. In 2025, travel is all about meaningful experiences, sustainability, and blending technology with adventure. P1 takes a deep dive into the key trends shaping the way travellers will explore the globe next year:
- Slow Travel Takes Centre Stage
In an age of fast-paced living, travellers are increasingly embracing slow travel—immersive journeys that focus on quality over quantity. Whether it’s spending weeks in a Tuscan villa, hopping between rural Japanese towns, or exploring Patagonia on foot, 2025 is about savouring the moment and forging deeper connections with destinations.
- Climate-Conscious Voyages
Sustainability is no longer a niche consideration; it’s a key driver for travellers. From carbon-offset flights to eco-certified accommodations, tourists are demanding greener options. Innovations like electric ferries, zero-waste resorts, and biofuel-powered planes are reshaping the industry, making it easier to travel responsibly without sacrificing comfort.
- Tech-Enhanced Getaways
The rise of AI and AR (augmented reality) is transforming the travel experience. Imagine using AR glasses to bring historical landmarks to life or AI-guided itineraries that adapt to your interests in real time. Virtual reality is also gaining traction, enabling "pre-travel" experiences so travellers can test destinations before booking.
- Workations Go Luxe
Remote work is no longer confined to home offices. In 2025, luxury workations are trending, with high-end resorts offering co-working spaces, concierge services for tech needs, and wellness programs to balance productivity with relaxation. Bali, Portugal, and the Maldives are leading hubs for digital nomads looking for the perfect blend of work and leisure.
- Wellness-Centric Travel
Post-pandemic travellers are prioritizing their health like never before. Destinations known for their healing properties, like Iceland’s geothermal spas or India’s Ayurvedic retreats, are seeing a surge in interest. Travelers are also drawn to adventure-based wellness, such as yoga hikes in Nepal or sound therapy in the Australian Outback.
- The Rise of "Set-Jetting"
Inspired by the popularity of streaming platforms, “set-jetting” has become a major trend. Travelers are flocking to iconic filming locations from hit shows and movies. From exploring the rugged landscapes of Scotland featured in Outlander to visiting Tokyo’s neon streets as seen in Lost in Translation, this trend is merging pop culture with wanderlust.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
Overcrowded hotspots are falling out of favour as adventurers seek untouched locales. In 2025, destinations like Albania, Bhutan, and Namibia are rising stars. These lesser-known spots offer the thrill of discovery and fewer crowds, making them perfect for travellers craving solitude and authenticity.
- Ultra-Personalized Journeys
Travel companies are leveraging big data to curate hyper-personalized experiences. Whether it’s crafting a wine-tasting itinerary for a sommelier or organizing stargazing expeditions for astronomy enthusiasts, the focus is on tailoring trips that cater to individual passions and preferences.
- Regenerative Tourism
Going beyond sustainability, regenerative tourism emphasises leaving destinations better than they were found. Travelers are engaging in activities like coral reef restoration in the Maldives, reforestation in the Amazon, and cultural preservation projects in indigenous communities.
- Culinary Expeditions
Food remains at the heart of travel, but in 2025, it’s about more than eating—it’s about learning. Travelers are joining farm-to-table cooking classes in Provence, truffle-hunting tours in Italy, and cacao-making workshops in Mexico. The focus is on understanding local food systems and traditions.
- Space Tourism Takes Flight
While still reserved for the ultra-wealthy, space tourism is no longer science fiction. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are making extraterrestrial adventures a reality. Suborbital flights and even stays at orbital hotels are on the horizon, capturing imaginations worldwide.
- Multigenerational Travel Returns
Families are reuniting through multigenerational trips, seeking destinations that cater to all ages. Cruises, heritage tours, and villa stays are popular options, combining bonding time with activities tailored to diverse interests.
- AI-Powered Language Solutions
Breaking down language barriers is easier than ever with real-time AI translation apps. Travelers are exploring destinations where they don’t speak the language with newfound confidence, fostering deeper cultural interactions.
2025 promises to be a transformative year for travel, as the industry adapts to evolving desires for meaningful, sustainable, and tech-driven experiences. Whether you’re planning a grand adventure or a quiet retreat, the trends of 2025 ensure there’s something for everyone. Where will you go next?
P1's Travel Media Breakfast Briefing: June 2024

This June, we organised a media breakfast briefing at The Groucho Club, a private members club in central London, and invited 30 top travel journalists. The purpose was to find out what they were writing about and interested in. We were representing several clients so we shared their latest news, initiatives and press trip opportunities and pitched story ideas.
The media who attended included a range of national media, online, luxury lifestyle, consumer magazine and freelance journalists.
The team hosted a series of individual meetings as journalists mingled and enjoyed some delicious breakfast. We built relationships with new media and strengthened current relationships with familiar travel editors and writers. The event had a great turnout with approximately 30 journalists attending.
Each journalist was given a goodie bag on leaving, with branded client merchandise which received some great responses. Overall, the event was a huge success, and we received great feedback from the journalists who attended. We are looking forward to our next hosted media event which will take place early 2025!
Opinion Piece: Tourism Tax - A Force for Good?
I must admit I was left slightly stunned when checking out of our Santa Monica Hotel when an additional $315 was added to our bill for a 7 night stay! We were told it was a new Tourism Tax, that every guest had to pay. It made me question whether this was reasonable, why hadn’t we been told about it in advance and what happens to this money?
As tourists we are guests in a neighbourhood using the facilities, creating wear and tear on the infrastructure, clogging up the roads, so I think it’s good to contribute. However, I do feel that tourism authorities have more of a responsibility to show where this money is spent and how it benefits the local community.
Does it for example fund infrastructure, public services, and promotional efforts that benefit both tourists and local residents? Or does it help preserve natural and cultural heritage sites, ensuring sustainability and reducing environmental impact?
Wales is the latest destination to moot the introduction of a tourism tax. If the bill is passed it could mean that £1.25 per night is added to the hotel bill but will generate £33 million annually across the country. The sums are large and would make quite a significant difference if the money is reinvested to benefit locals and visitors.
In the past destinations have been worried that the introduction of a tourism tax would potentially deter budget-conscious tourists and lead tourists to choose destinations with lower or no tourism taxes. However, such concerns have not come to fruition.
A tax could be used strategically to manage overtourism, by charging higher rates during peak seasons. This might help situations, like we saw this summer of tourists being heckled by locals, if locals felt they were benefiting from the visitors’ presence.
Tourism taxes can be a powerful tool when used wisely but must be implemented thoughtfully to avoid negative consequences for the local economy and tourism industry.
I think tourism authorities are missing a trick in communicating both to locals and visitors on how tourism taxes are being used as a force for good.
So visitors like me are happy to pay that extra levy as they are checking out, and locals feel they are also benefitting. It should be a win/win situation.
If managed correctly, tourism taxes can help ensure that the benefits of travel are shared fairly, while preserving the beauty and vibrancy of the destinations people come to enjoy.
